Here at Sportvent we listed our top 5 college football teams in the nation, and now we will attempt to communicate a coherent rationale as to why we think the way we do.
Tim Tebow
#1 Florida
The best defensive team in the country and defenses win championships. Now that the Gators seem to have found their offense they are the most complete team in the nation. If everything goes according to plan they will beat the offense-less Alabama team in New Orleans in the SEC championship and go on to the National Championship. I would love to see them play Oregon if Oregon is undefeated most likely, however, they will play Taxes if Texas is undefeated.
I’ve written all year that I think Florida has the best defense in the country and it’s just a matter of time before they find their offense. With everything clicking as it should I can’t see anyone threatening their standing, maybe Florida State. The most points the defense allowed all season is 20 to Arkansas, that’s damn good. There are two teams that remain on the schedule who can give the Gators problems, well one really, Florida State. The Seminoles have a very good offense and the Gators better have their offense ready to go this could be a shoot out. I believe the Gators get passed Flo. State because of the great D.
Colt McCoy
#2 Texas
A very solid defense but the Longhorns are not as good as Florida on offense or defense, so they are just below the Gators on our list. What impresses me is the win over Oklahoma. The defense was stout and has been all season. Against Oklahoma State the offense put up 275 total yard but the defense intercepted Zac Robinson 4 times and twice for a pick 6. This defense is battle tested, it is up against very good offenses week in and week out. They play a little more offense in the BIG 12 then they do in the SEC. The defense with that outstanding secondary is just smothering teams. Against the pass happy Cowboys the Longhorns allowed only 143 yards and 134 on the ground.
Offensively Texas is putting up points against good teams. Colt McCoy is one of the best in the country especially on the run. He is completing 72% of his passes WOW! McCoy can get away from the pressure and buy more time when the protection breaks down. When ever you have a guy like that behind center you always have a chance.
Jeremiah Masoli
#3 Oregon
The best offense in the country. I know they have one loss and I know we have Boise State a team that beat the Ducks at #5 but I believe if the two played today Oregon would win. Oregon arguably has the best offense in the country (613 total yards vs. USC). I would say they have played better longer on offense than the Gators so in my eyes they do have the best offense in the country. If the Ducks win out and they will have to beat Oregon State to go undefeated, and if Iowa wins the BIG 10 the two will play in the Rose Bowl. But I just don’t see the Hawkeyes being able to keep up with this Oregon offense.
On defense this team is not as good as they are on offense but they are doing the things they need to do to win. Against USC that defense allowed the Trojans to hang with the offense but when they came out in the 2nd half it was all over. The defense allowed only 3 points in the 2nd half.
Andy Dalton
#4 TCU
A solid team on both sides of the ball. TCU has the strength of schedule on their side. With wins over Virginia, Clemson, who beat Miami as well as the big win over BYU, who beat Oklahoma. The Horned Frogs are battle tested and really would you want to come near a frog much less a “HORNED” one.
TCU is playing extremely well especially on defense. The most points the Horned Frogs have allowed all season is 21 and they scored 56 in that game. I don’t see this TCU team losing this year unless if maybe they play Florida in the national championship game and since that is not going to happen they are not losing this year.
Kellen Moore
#5 Boise State
For the simple reason that they beat Oregon. Boise is an outstanding offensive team with a solid defense. However with just one tough opponent on the schedule (Oregon) I have to put them at #5. I think the TCU defense is just a little better and a much tougher strength of schedule.
The offense is putting up huge numbers but against below average competition. Kellen Moore is sharp, completing 67% of his passes. The RBs are averaging no less than 5.5 ypc. Defensively they have taken the ball away but it’s their own turnovers that bother me. The Broncos turn the ball over, 9 turnovers in 8 games. It has not mattered to this point because they score so much, however, against better competition this may hurt them.
